Volunteers plant 100 new shrubs, trees along Junction Creek

Volunteers join Junction Creek Stewardship to help beautify Sudbury

About 40 volunteers helped beautify Junction Creek and made Sudbury a little bit greener on Oct. 3.

The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee and the crew of volunteers met behind the New Sudbury Centre to plant native trees and shrubs along the creek.

New Sudbury Centre paid for the trees and shrubs which were provided by Southview Greenhouse Growers at a discount.

"The plants are picked for a number of reasons," Junction Creek Stewardship board director Peter Beckett said. "Some of them are here because they are lovely showy trees like red maple. Others are here because they produce showy flowers or berries for the birds."

"Some are here to provide shade along the creek so we can try to keep water temperatures cooler in the creek so the fish have better summer conditions."

Considering we are still in a pandemic and there is currently a limit on gatherings, the volunteers were split into two groups. The first group worked in the morning and the second group took over around 11 a.m.

"We thank people for coming out and we are pleased with the turn out," Beckett said. "This is the first event we've been able to hold since COVID-19 started. A lot of protocols have been put into effect to ensure everyone is safe and keep their distance."
