Wal-Mart Canada joined countless other businesses and organizations in Sudbury in putting food on the table of the less fortunate.

Wal-Mart New Sudbury management and staff presented Reggie Ruffo, membership liaison co-ordinator for Banque d'aliments Sudbury Food Bank, with a cheque for $1,515 on Dec. 16.

Wal-Mart Canada made a $5 donation to the Sudbury Food Bank for every Wal-Mart Rewards MasterCard application completed by local Wal-Mart stores from Oct. 21 to Dec. 9.

“Every month, the Banque d’aliments Sudbury Food Bank, through its member agencies, provides food and services to more than 14,000 people, and close to half of the people receiving services from the Banque d’aliments Sudbury Food Bank are children,” Ruffo said.

Although the need is present all year round, it is most prevalent at this time of the year, he said. Many families have a difficult time at Christmas as they try to provide a little something extra under their trees, so this is time of the year when “giving is most needed.”

With the purchasing power of the Banque d’aliments Sudbury Food Bank, it will be able to turn a $1,500 donation, like the one from Wal-Mart, into about $7,000 of food to put on the tables of the less fortunate in the Greater City of Sudbury and make a difference to many families this Christmas, he added.
