Wintry weather has arrived in Greater Sudbury and city roads are feeling the effects of snowy season.

After a major snowstorm last week, followed by frigid temperatures that froze everything in place, city crews will take advantage of warmer weather this week to clear up trouble spots.

Crews will be salting major arterial and collector routes today. Because road salt requires temperatures of at least -12 C to be effective, the city said it had to wait for the weather to warm before applying the salt.

The milder weather coupled with salt application should return roads nearly to bare conditions more rapidly.

Residential and rural roads are plowed to snow-packed conditions when accumulations reach eight centimetres, and sanded as needed on icy sections.

City crews are deployed to major arterial and collector roads at the start of a winter event, the city said in a news release today, while all municipal roads are plowed on a continuous basis during winter storms.
