The first of two public hearings to rezone land on the Kingsway to allow the new arena/events centre begins this afternoon, and it's expected to draw supporters on either side of the debate.

It is also the first public hearing on an Official Plan amendment to allow the casino on the same parcel of land owned by developer Dario Zulich.

A similar scene played out last June, when city council voted to build the $100 million centre in the newly-named Kingsway Entertainment District, where Gateway Casino has announced plans to build a $60 million casino it says will create 200 new jobs. A hotel is also planned on the site, which should be open in 2020.

Supporters of keeping the arena downtown have campaigned to reverse that decision, with a symbolic walk to the Kingsway site and a letter-writing campaign to local media.
