The freezing rain we were warned about is sweeping south from the northern parts of Ontario, seeming to close highways as it goes.

The Ontario Provincial Police have already closed eight highways in the Smooth Rock Falls and Cochrane areas along Highway 11.

Currently closed due to icy conditions are the following highways:

  • Hwy 652
  • Hwy 579
  • Hwy 574
  • Hwy 636
  • Hwy 668
  • Hwy 634
  • Hwy 7036 (Potter Rd)
  • Hwy 7037 (Hanna Rd)

The roads were closed at the request of the Ministry of Transportation because plows have been unable to move on the highways.

There's no estimated time that the roads will be re-opened.

As well, Highway 17 between Wawa and White River that was closed due to a washout has reopened to one lane. Drivers can detour on Highway 101 or Highway 144 to get over to Highway 11.

Police also say weather is to blame for a crash on Highway 11 near Kirkland Lake. The multiple-vehicle collision resulted in no serious injuries, police say, but it has closed the highway between Highway 66 and Highway 112. There is no detour around the area.

The OPP have announced that Highway 556 (Ranger Lake Road), north of Sault Ste. Marie, is closed to Highway 129 and Highway 532 due to the weather conditions.
