What better way to close Canada 150 celebrations than by skating

Copper Cliff Skating Club joined in for a nationwide skating party organized by Skate Canada

If you thought Canada 150 celebrations would be over without enjoying a true northern winter sport, Sudbury.com is here to tell you to lace up.

The McClelland Arena was among 17 arenas coast-to-coast that hosted a community skate as part of Skate Canada celebrations.

“Considering we are now the longest running club here in the north, going 82 years strong, it was a real honour to be selected to host this fun-filled event” Janet Jewitt, President of the Copper Cliff Skating Club said.

The excitement could be heard throughout the arena as the event started off with a friendly tug of war and races. Later on, skaters of all levels joined the party by dancing their way on the ice.

The event featured all the essentials of a celebration such as cake, popcorn, hot chocolate, coffee and some high energy tunes.

“I am here with all my friends from the skating club and my parents. This is so much fun” Lacey Mackinnon, double leap trickster said.

While some eagerly showed off their tricks on ice, others were happy teaching their kids learn the art of balancing on ice.

“I think everyone is having such a blast, which is the most important thing,” Jewitt said.

The celebrations from the 17 flagship arenas will be broadcast at Parliament Hill, in Ottawa today as they join in the celebrations this evening.

If you missed out on the skating activities, Sudbury.com has you covered.
