What is the 'Junction Creek Amazing Race'? View our gallery to find out!

Event raised funds and awareness that will expand free children's educational programming and restoration efforts at Junction Creek

The inaugural Junction Creek Amazing Race took place this Sunday, bringing spectators and two dozen teams out to the Adanac ski hill in order to raise money and awareness on behalf of the Junction Creek Watershed.

The 5 km course lived up to its name and saw participants running and down the ski hill, competing in wheel barrow races and completing memory and puzzle solving challenges, all the while finding unique and fun ways to work together as teams. Some participants walked during long legs of the journey while others ran and some even crawled (look for it in the photos). Cooperation and coordination were keys to completing a successful race.

The event was organized by the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee to raise funds for the continued restoration of the Junction Creek Watershed. Carly Andrews organized the race and said 83 people signed up to compete in 24 teams this weekend.  "We do a lot of education and awareness, and cleanups of the creek. This was basically to raise awareness of the Junction Creek Watershed as well as to get that funding in order to continue our efforts," Andrews said.

Over $3,000 was raised this year and if enthusiasm is any indicator, future events will prove to be even bigger successes.

"The challenges were actually challenging so it was kind of a nice mix of things and a great way to promote Junction Creek. We'll definitely be back," said Helen Francis of team "Vale Ultra" who placed second over the weekend.

Placing third was team "We Get the "Junc" Out of Junction Creek", made up of members Debie Myre, Stephanie Zakamarko, Terri Forsyth and Tracy McLeod.

Winning this year's race was team les "Grenouilles," which included members Christian Bouchard, Anne Watelet, Sabine Bouchard and Nick Beckett.

Asked what it took for his crew to win, Christian Bouchard said, "We did absolutely terrific. We knew we had a balanced team, we are sportive. We have some intellect, we have young, we had everything right."
