Many of us baby boomers have started either writing a bucket list or scratching items off the bucket list. There is even a movie titled The Bucket List. There are literally dozens of websites — like this one — that give you the most popular bucket list ideas, and even one that logs and catalogs your bucket list.

Cruising route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica has been on my husband Roger’s bucket list forever! He spent most of his childhood either working on a farm or — you might have guessed it — playing in an old abandoned car, thinking about his dream.

As a young adult, Roger’s dream of owning a classic car came true. However, this was short lived as his business and his family took up all of his energy and time.

So it was another 20 years before he could finally buy his first true classic, a ’54 Ford. Now, he has made a business of his lifetime passion. If you want to see how big his dream has grown in reality, tou can either visit the showroom in Val Caron (2472 Evans Rd.) or visit the website RCCClassicCars.com to see how his incredible collection of classic vehicles.

Now that he’s turned 66, it seemed the perfect age to make his other dream, of cruising along Route 66, come true. And he’s not doing it alone.

Driving with us on the 2,448 miles of Route 66 between Chicago, Illinois, and Santa Monica, California, are his three brothers and a nephew, making the trip all the more special. Plus, we’re doing it in style.

Thanks to Roger’s car collection, the five couples on the journey are each driving a separate classic automobile.

I’ll be chronicling the journey on a blog. I’ll give you the sights and sounds of our crazy journey as we together fulfill my husband’s dream.

We’re not just doing it for Roger, though. We’re raising money along the way. If you enjoy this blog, consider a donation of $24.48, a penny a mile, that we’ll donate to the Northern Cancer Foundation. You can reach the foundation at 705-523-4673.

Or, you can donate to the Sam Bruno PET Scanner by visiting SamBrunoPETScanner4Sudbury.ca.

Too many loved ones, members of our families and dear friends have left us prematurely, losing their battle to cancer.

As many of you know, Sam Bruno died of cancer in 2010 at the age of 55. The first thing on his bucket list was to ensure every cancer patient in Northern Ontario had the right to a PET scan without having to travel to Toronto. His family and friends continue his fight and are almost there.

Come along for the ride.
