What's with all the weeds around city hall?

The outside of Tom Davies Square is a little weedy this summer.

The courtyard near the provincial building is looking particularly neglected, with planters full of weeds and at least one sickly looking tree located near the picnic tables.

City communications officer Shannon Dowling said the area hasn't been landscaped recently because of a change in who maintains the area.

"Until June 1, there was a property management company that managed that building,” Dowling said. “When the contract came up, the city decided to take over the property management of it.

"We felt we could probably do it for less money than we were spending towards this company. It was more of an efficiency thing. Our folks took it over as of June 1 and there are plans to do some landscaping, but unfortunately it just got pushed back for the time being."

But the area should be cleaned up this week, Dowling added, with some landscaping, weeding and some flower boxes going in the area.
