Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl initiative is taking to social media with their lemon challenge campaign.

The lemon challenge is an easy way for Canadians of all ages to join in and show support for girls' rights and gender equality.

This latest challenge is in support of Plan Canada's Pink LemonAid program, which is part of the Because I am a Girl initiative.

The challenge calls on Canadians to post a picture or video of themselves making a "lemon face" with the hashtag #LemonChallenge4Change, make a donation to the Because I am a Girl initiative, and nominate a friend or colleague to do the same.

"During the past five years, hundreds of people have participated in the Pink LemonAid program. The level of excitement and participation that the program has achieved speaks volumes about the importance of this cause and the commitment here in Canada to end gender discrimination for girls globally," said Sarah Muir, Manager Brand & Community Engagement Plan Canada.

"Last year more than 22,400 cups of lemonade were sold by boys and girls from across Canada with an average of $175 raised per stand. We hope Canadians join in this summer and participate by taking the lemon challenge and hosting Pink LemonAid stands."

Funds raised from the Pink LemonAid campaign will go to Because I am a Girl projects that provide clean water, food, health care, girls' scholarships and education, and a brighter economic future to girls and their families so they can break the cycle of poverty.

Because I am a Girl has also supported a number of projects for girls in developing countries, driving real change.

Participating in the Pink LemonAid lemon challenge takes just three easy steps:

1.Take a photo/video of yourself biting into a lemon or making a "lemon face"

2.Visit becauseiamagirl.ca/lemonchallenge and donate to Plan's Because I am a Girl initiative in support of girls' rights.

3.Post your photo/video on Twitter, Instagram or Vine with the hashtag #LemonChallenge4Change. Don't forget to tag and challenge your friends, family and colleagues too.

If you're looking for a way to get more involved, follow up your lemon challenge by hosting a Pink LemonAid stand to fundraise and create awareness for gender equality.
