When you support YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign you're supporting real kids

Campaign ensures all children, regardless of their family's means, can stay active

When families face a budget crunch, usually the first things to go are recreational activities and gym memberships. But YMCA Sudbury believes people's health shouldn't be determined by what's in their bank account.

That's why every year it raises funds through its Strong Kids Campaign to ensure people can access YMCA Sudbury's facilities or take part in its programming, such as swimming lessons or summer camp.

Last year, the campaign raised around $120,000, and about 2,100 families and individuals accessed support. This year, YMCA Sudbury aims to raise $130,000. So far, the campaign has brought in about $91,000.

A campaign wrap-up breakfast was held at YMCA Sudbury Thursday morning, where a number of donors made cheque presentations.

“All funds raised here in our community support local kids and their families to be able to have that YMCA experience,” said Kim Kanmacher, president and CEO of YMCA Sudbury.

“Any families that come forward that wouldn't have that ability to afford the full fee, we would meet with them and work out a contribution so we could help support those families so that everyone has that opportunity.”

Vale spokesperson Danica Pagnutti presented a cheque for $5,000 at the breakfast on behalf of her employers. She said the company has donated $40,000 to YMCA Sudbury over the past five years.

“Vale's support for the YMCA stems from our shared understanding for the need for people of all ages to lead healthier lives, regardless of their financial circumstances,” she said.

“As I'm sure you heard here this morning, one in five children who walk through the doors of the YMCA Sudbury require assisted support. Programs like Strong Kids help these children and their families get the support they need to have fun, get fit and enjoy life at the YMCA.”
