With coyotes in the Valley, bears in the city, and foxes on the golf course, residents of the Greater City of Sudbury need to know who to call if they encounter wild animals on their property.
With coyotes in the Valley, bears in the city, and foxes on the golf course, residents of the Greater City of Sudbury need to know who to call if they encounter wild animals on their property.

Knowing who to call and what to do depends on the type of animal and the situation. Municipal by-laws prohibit the use of firearms within the city unless a wild animal poses an immediate threat.

Farmers who are forced to shoot a wild animal are asked to call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at 1-800-461-3213 so the agency can take a sample from the dead animal.

The Livestock and Honeybee Protection Act may compensate farmers for livestock killed or injured by a wild animal. Contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food toll-free at 674-2312 or 1-800-461-6132 for information.

If a non-domesticated animal is discovered on private property, contact the Ministry of Natural Resources at 1-800-667-1940. If the animal is endangering the life of someone on the property, call the Greater Sudbury Police at 675-9171 or dial 9-1-1.

Anybody coming into contact with a suspected rabid animal, they should contact the Sudbury and District Health Unit at 522-9200.
