After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2007, Sudbury real estate agent Terry Ames says the financial and emotional support he received from his loved ones helped him pull through.
In 2011, Ames was declared cancer free and decided to throw a big party to celebrate and raise funds for other families.
"We started the Tee off for Terry golf tournament to raise funds," Ames said. "But then we thought 'Why don't we do it again but do it for a charity? Let's start our own charity!'"
The Terry Ames Care Fund at the Northern Cancer Foundation was set up to provide some financial support to families so they could focus on beating cancer instead of covering the bills.
Since 2012, the charity has helped more than 100 local families and raised more than $130,000 through golf tournaments and the Cancer Support Draw, which is now underway.

The draw date is July 20, which is a significant day for Ames and his family.
"That is the day I was told my cancer was gone," Ames said. "My family and I celebrate this special day every year and this year we get to celebrate with all the lucky winners of the big draw."
