Witches spotted strolling in Downtown Sudbury ... for a cause

Sudbury Witches Walk takes over the streets Thursday to benefit the Sudbury Women's Centre

Sudbury sorceresses were spotted strolling through downtown Sudbury on Thursday night during a witches walk.

Dozens of ladies clad in their witch apparel showed up Thursday for the event that was aimed at not only helping out the Sudbury Women's Centre, but promoting the city's downtown businesses.

The idea for the witches walk was conjured up in a group chat between friends who had heard of similar walks being done in other cities.

"It just sounded like a fun idea so we put together a Facebook event page and the response was amazing," said Lisa Demmer, one of the event's organizers. "We had around 100 people confirmed on the page that they would be taking part."

Witches gathered at Zen Fitness for a pre-party Thursday, before grabbing their maps of the downtown and hitting the streets.

The event was free to attend, but all participants were invited to make small donations of personal care products - shampoo, soap and other toiletries - that could be dropped off at any of the businesses participating in the evening, and would then be donated to the Sudbury Women's Centre.

"All of the downtown businesses have really stepped up," said Melissa Gainer, another one of the event organizers. "Most businesses are offering discounts tonight if you make a donation."

Most of the ladies who helped put the event together work downtown, or frequent the area to shop and dine. Demmer says that introducing what Sudbury's downtown has to offer was another goal of the witches walk.

"There's people who may not really know what's down here, they might not come downtown very often," said Demmer. "We wanted to give people the opportunity to shop and eat and drink downtown and get to know what's here. It's really important to support local businesses."
