The Sudbury Wolves’ two power play goals in the hockey game propelled the Wolves to a hard fought overtime victory against the Peterborough Petes, with Nathan Villeneuve scoring the overtime winner and Finn Marshall making 31 saves. Final score was 2-to-one for the Wolves.
This is earned the Wolves first and second star honours, respectively, helping the Wolves to a 32 wins, 37 regulation losses, and five overtime losses record with four games remaining in the regular season.
Finn Marshall was the starting goaltender for the Wolves on the road while Zach Bowen got the start in net at home for the Peterborough Petes.
Under one and a half minutes into the hockey game, Gavin Bryant fed a backdoor pass to Francis Parish for his seventh goal of the season, giving Peterborough a very early 1-0 lead.
Peterborough kept pouring it on but with just over 16 minutes remaining in the first, Marshall came up with a great save to keep the Wolves down by just a single goal after the first period of play.
With Peterborough’s Rio Kaiser serving a two minute minor penalty for Cross Checking, Wolves’ forward and San Jose Sharks’ Quentin Musty took a shot from in close and capitalized on it for his 30th goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.
With just under eight minutes remaining in the middle frame, Brady Stonehouse tried to deke his way to a goal for Peterborough but was denied by yet another save by Marshall, keeping the score 1-1.
Peterborough had another golden opportunity in the dying seconds of the second period, but Finn Marshall was equal to the task, and the score remained 1-1 heading into the third and final period of regulation.
The third period didn’t yield any results, therefore both the Sudbury Wolves and the Peterborough Petes earned one point and hoping to earn the second point in overtime.
Petes’ goaltender Zach Bowen was nabbed for a tripping penalty at the 2:17 mark of the overtime, leading to Nathan Villeneuve shooting the puck from the top of the right faceoff circle giving the Wolves a hard earned overtime win for their 32nd win of the season.
With the win, the Sudbury Wolves still find themselves in third place in the Central Division and sixth place in the Eastern Conference with just four games left until the first round of the Ontario Hockey League Playoffs.
