A 71-year-old woman remains in intensive care at St. Joseph's Health Centre after an accident at the corner of Elgin and Cedar Streets Wednesday afternoon.

Police are still in the early stages of their investigation and are urging anyone who witnessed the accident to contact Greater Sudbury Police at 675-9171.

The woman was walking from the Farmer's Market side of Elgin toward Cedar just outside the crosswalk area when she was struck by a 2001 Chevy pickup.

The driver, a 68-year-old man, was making a left turn from Cedar to Elgin.

According to Greater Sudbury Police Staff Sgt. Todd Zimmerman, the woman suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Paramedics worked on her for a few minutes in the ambulance before transporting her to the hospital.

At the scene, a woman's brown shoe and a pool of blood could be seen in front of the truck, which came to a stop in the middle of the intersection.

Police had the area blocked off as they reconstructed the accident Wednesday, and remain in the preliminary stages of their investigation.
