Xstrata Nickel and Mine Mill Local 598/CAW reached a tentative deal at around 7:45 a.m. Feb. 1.

Even though the union's collective agreement expired at midnight Jan. 31, negotiators from both sides stayed at the bargaining table past the strike deadline.

A press release from the union said its negotiating committee bargained “long and hard” to reach a “fair and equitable” deal.

Marc Boissonneault, vice-president of Xstrata Nickel Sudbury Operations, said he was pleased the marathon bargaining session had reached a successful conclusion.

“We are very pleased to have successfully reached this tentative agreement," he said. "We believe the new offer is fair and balances the needs of our company with those of employees. We can now look forward to working together to pursue our goals in Sudbury, positioning our business for future success.

"The positive outcome from these negotiations was the result of dedication and commitment on both sides of the bargaining table, and I congratulate both teams for their success.”

A voicemail from Local 598 president Richard Paquin said no details of the tentative deal will be released until ratification meetings, which are slated to take place at the Dowling Leisure Centre at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 1.
