The Physical Activity and Chronic Unit at York University will present a workshop and pre-diabetes detection and physical activity intervention Feb. 7 at Cambrian College.

The workshop, which begins at 6 p.m., covers topics such as background information about diabetes and pre-diabetes, the relationship between diabetes and physical activity, culturally-specific approaches to diabetes prevention, identifying high-risk individuals and community-based interventions.

According to the workshop's organizers, diabetes has become a global epidemic. In Canada, cases of diabetes and pre-diabetes are continually on the rise, and the projected impact on our health-care system is overwhelming.

Type 2 diabetes represents 90 per cent of the diabetes in Canada, and is associated with modifiable risk factors that can be addressed through prevention strategies.

The York University Pre-diabetes Detection and Physical Activity Intervention Delivery (PRE-PAID) Project aims to prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes through the implementation of physical activity at the community level.

A key initiative of the project is to provide hands-on training to qualified exercise and health professionals in detecting and addressing pre-diabetes, giving them the knowledge to implement diabetes prevention programs in their own local communities.

To register for the workshop, which costs $35 plus HST, visit www.oshf.ca, phone 1-877-651-3755, ext. 22.
