Are you a post-secondary school graduate between 20 and 35-years old who is planting roots in Greater Sudbury and wants meet other like-minded people?  If so, the Young Professionals Association (YPA) might be the ticket.

The YPA will host its inaugural gala April 7 at the Inco Cavern in Science North with the aim to become the voice of young adults in Greater Sudbury.

The YPA gala is being presented by the Regional Business Centre with partners radio station Q92, Northern Ontario Business and Northern Life.

Martin Rondeau, a youth strategy coordinator with the city, said the gala will enable young professionals to come together, network and develop contacts with other young professionals.

“There’s no such thing in Sudbury right now,” said Rondeau, who is hoping to form an executive committee to oversee YPA activities.

“We will be looking for young professionals who will partake in the executive committee and spearhead future activities for the association.”

Following registration at the gala, participants will hear presentations on the nature of the association, its intent and beliefs. Participants will also be provided with information on joining  the executive committee.

After networking, people will dance and enjoy the music of  Rex Holmes and the Cheetah’s, a five-piece funk, soul and rock band.

Similar organizations have been launched in Toronto and Ottawa, with much success. Rondeau said he thinks similar success could be achieved in Sudbury.

An idea like this is just what Sudbury needs, and could really drive back the youth out-migration trend, he said.  It could do so much good for young adults looking to stay in Sudbury and be successful. “It will help bridge the gaps. For example, there’s a lack of networking opportunities for future young leaders and this addresses that gap.

“I believe the city is in an upswing. It’s actually giving a lot of attention to our youth. Sudbury is a very friendly city pertaining to young adults, it’s simply a matter of getting the word out there and getting them informed. I believe the YPA will be an important tool in delivering that message to that crowd,” he said.
