Local youth who love singing, dancing or acting are invited to take part in the Valley’s Got Talent Contest, with a chance to win prizes.

The contest is being put on by Valley Community Theatre, and it’s open to youth aged 12 to 21 who reside in the Greater Sudbury area.

“It did start as a fundraiser, but the main goal is to get young folks involved in theatre, and to get them involved in the performing arts,” said Heleene Cameron of Valley Community Theatre.

She said the contest gives them “an avenue to get out there and perform.”

“It is a juried competition, because we felt that it's important to get your performance up to a level that you were very happy with. It could be very subjective. But we just wanted to play some importance on it.”

If you’d like to take part in the contest, the registration deadline is June 10.

Registrations are being accepted by email at [email protected], by phone at 705-969-3122 or 705-919-3438 or by messaging the Valley's Got Talent Capreol Facebook page.

Auditions will then take place June 17 and 18. Those taking part in the auditions are asked to prepare one audition piece.

Those advancing to the next round will then take part in the main competition Aug. 3 at Cousin Vinny’s Restaurant in Hanmer. For that round of the competition, participants will be asked to prepare two pieces.

Participants are advised to “choose a performance piece that reflects your unique style and personality while staying true to the spirit of your chosen art form.”

“This unique competition recognizes and celebrates the undeniable passion and talent that so many young people possess,” said information on the Valley’s Got Talent Facebook page.

“The contest delivers a chance for aspiring artists to exhibit their skills and fulfill their dreams.”

Participants are also advised to “dress to impress – choose stylish and trendy outfits that complement your performance,” as well as to “bring energy, enthusiasm, and confidence to the stage, because it can make all the difference.”

The prizes on offer in the contest are as follows:

  • First place: $400, headshots and professional acting or vocal coaching
  • Second place: $200, plus professional coaching
  • Third place: $100, plus professional coaching

The coaching and headshot prizes have been donated by Sudbury Performance Group (Irmgard Hechler), That Creative Loft (Kelly Lamb), Act With Purpose (John Stevens, international acting coach) and Lawson Vocals.

All winners will also have the opportunity to perform during Valley East Days, happening in September.
