On May 15, the downtown Zellers department store will be closing its doors and that means a loss of dozens of jobs.

Zellers officials told the media the store?an anchor tenant in the Rainbow Outlet Centre for the past 15 years?isn?t as profitable as the two other Zellers in the Sudbury area.

Zellers is the downtown mall?s largest tenant, occupying some 73,000 square feet. There are 87 full-and-part employees.

The downtown Zellers has been deemed non-strategic, and the move to shut it down will benefit the two other locations, said a company spokesperson.

A hiring freeze is in place at the two other Sudbury Zellers in the Supermall and the Southridge Mall.

Workers from the downtown store will meet today to discuss the closure and options for the employees. Over 70 of the Zellers staff belong to United
Food and Commercial Workers? Union Local 175. Employees will be offered severance packages. Some employees have worked at the location for 30 years.

Rainbow Outlet Centre management would not comment on the store?s closure.
