A new service for members, a new story and a grateful lengthening of days

Spring is just around the corner (thank goodness)

Hello, Sudbury.com+ members! Welcome to another Monday. I hope you had a decent weekend and that the pandemic fatigue is at least manageable.

Just a little update to some of the things we are working on this week. But first, a note on the weather: The days are getting longer!

This is one of the happiest times of the year for me, when I notice that, “Hey! It’s still light out at 5:30 p.m. — spring is coming!”

I don’t hate winter the way I used to, but I’m still not what you’d call a fan of the season. I’ve always been fairly slim, but there was a time more than a decade ago when I was really, really slim.

When you have little body fat to speak of, there are certain things that are uncomfortable. One of those is going swimming, an activity I used to hate because the ambient temperature of the water was cold enough to cause physical pain. Nothing says fun like shivering uncontrollably.

The other is winter. I used to put on so many layers of clothing I looked like the Michelin Man trying to toddle along.

For me, when I finally notice the days are lengthening instead of shortening, it’s a pretty happy time.

Anyway, Village Media, our parent company, is rolling out a new service this week for Sudbury.com+ members. You should be receiving an email, if you haven’t already, inviting you to sign up for Subtext.

It doesn’t cost you any money to do so. Subtext provides a more direct way for us to reach out to you or for you to reach out to us over text messaging. We’ll send you contest details, highlight stories we’re working on and occasionally ask your opinion.

You can also send texts to us using Subtext. Maybe there is a question you’d like answered or a news tip you’d like to share, or maybe you just want to say hello.

This week in coverage, among many stories we are chasing, we’ll be at the opening of the new Hilton Garden Inn on The Kingsway on Tuesday.

City hall reporter Matt Durnan is covering city council on Tuesday. Of course, there are a number of city stories Mr. Durnan is chasing, but the big push over the coming weeks is the city budget, with three budget meetings scheduled over the next week.

Our Communities reporter, Jenny Lamothe, has a story this week on Taisto Eilomaa, a Sudbury man who passed away in the COVID-19 outbreak at Finlandia Village. Mr. Eilomaa was an integral part of Sudbury’s Finnish community, a successful business owner and one of the founders of Finlandia.

As always we’ll be continuing our usual coverage of the pandemic, health care, schools and more. Enjoy your week!
