July 5, 1928 – January 26, 2022
Danilo Castagna passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto in his 94th year after suffering a stroke at home.
He was loved and cared for by his children Francesco (Heather) and Maria (Alexander) and grandsons Dante and José Danilo. Predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Rosa. He leaves behind sisters Armida, Rita, and Francesca and sisters-in-law Lina and Rosanna in Italy, Rosa’s cousin and best friend Gianna in Toronto, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Danilo emigrated to Sudbury from Valdagno, Vicenza, Italy in 1957 and was joined by Rosa three years later when he had saved enough to pay for her passage. He worked for many years as a bricklayer and stonemason, and his handiwork can be seen at many residences in and around the Sudbury region. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his time trekking through the bush to get to his favourite fishing holes, well into his eighties. In his retirement, Danilo and Rosa vacationed in Puerta Vallarta Mexico for a month every winter, but still loved coming home to do some ice fishing. They both enjoyed their vegetable garden in Sudbury as well as the autumn bounty of their pear tree. His favourite role was being a fun and loving Nonno to his grandsons.
The family would like to thank Reconnect Community Services Day Program – Bloor Street West for their support and care over the past eight years. Even with his Alzheimer’s disease Danilo was a happy participant and occasional Italian singer.
Donations to Reconnect in memory of Danilo can be made at https://www.reconnect.on.ca/
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in both Toronto and Sudbury.
