It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Domenico DiPietrantonio passed away on Sunday May 21, 2023, at Health Sciences North in his 92nd year, surrounded by his loving family.

Domenico was born in Gallo Matese, Campagna, a small farming village in the beautiful mountains of Central Italy where the air is fresh, and life was simple. He was the son of Pietro and Angelina (nee Cioffi) both predeceased, and the beloved brother of Antonia (Domenico), Maria (Antonio), Antonio (Rosa) all predeceased and, Rosa (Domenico) and Pasquale (Rosa).

Our Dad married his beloved Maria (nee Perrino predeceased) on October 18, 1954, and immigrated to Canada in June 1957. Together they lovingly raised their four children Pat (Emily), Peter (Jenine Saunders), Angelina (Ed Masotti) and Joseph (Tiffany Murray).

He was the cherished Nonno to Christina (Jose Antonio Paez), Lindsay, Jacob and Caleb. BisNonno to Nicholas and Maximus Paez, special Nonno to Andrew and Mark Masotti, and special BisNonno to Davianna, Rosa, and Theodoro Masotti. Dear Brother-in-law to Giovanni, Francesco, Domenico, and Pasquale (all predeceased) and Angela and Antonio (Kelly) Perrino. He was deeply respected and loved by many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.

Domenico was a pillar of strength for his family. For 32 years, he worked for the Regional Municipality of Sudbury as a bricklayer and Crew Foreman. He worked long, hard hours to ensure his wife and children were always well cared for, safe and happy.

He understood the value of a good education. It’s what he most wanted and dreamed of for his children, so he encouraged and supported each of us through our academic endeavors. He was so proud that his children were afforded the opportunity for a higher education in his beloved Canada.

Domenico loved working with his hands. Following his retirement, he had ample time to pursue his three passions, woodworking, tinkering in his garage and fishing. Never one to sit still, he always had a project on the go, whether it was building dining room chairs and tables, outdoor benches or portable greenhouses for our mom’s flowers and tomato plants. You could always find our dad in his garage with a saw, drill or hammer in his hand meticulously focused on his project. In his leisure time, he and our mom would take a day, drive to Manitoulin Island with their fishing gear and prosciutto sandwiches packed and find the perfect spot to cast their lines hoping to catch a few fish.

Our Dad lived his 30 plus retirement years with daily chronic pain in his legs and back. However, despite his physical limitations, he met each day with incredible courage, strength and determination. His motto was to “keep going no matter what”. Thanks to Lina and Jenine, he was able to do that for many years.

Later in life, as a resident of The Amberwood Suites, he could be found strolling the walking path slowly and carefully with his walker as his constant companion, enjoying the afternoon sunshine on his face, chatting it up with friends and then stopping to enjoy a coffee on the back patio. He thrived there. We will forever be grateful to all the staff, PSWs and residents of Amberwood for the outstanding love, support and kindness they provided Domenico in his final years.

Dad: Your unexpected passing has been devastating to us all. We will love you and you will remain in our hearts forever. Your strength and courage not only as a man, but as a devoted family man, made us all so proud. With your strength and courage, together with Mom’s sweetness and purity of heart, you have left an indelible legacy for your future generations. You lived a beautiful, fulfilled life. May you now find peace and eternal rest.

We would like to express our thanks to the Nursing staff and Physicians who cared for Domenico at Health Sciences North, especially Lindsay, Tanya Steve, Dr. Di Marchi and Dr. Manchuck. Your care and compassion are truly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Joseph’s Villa Foundation in memory of Domenico DiPietrantonio.
