Dear sister of Rita predeceased, Gina, Severino, Fernanda predeceased, Margaret, Luigi, and Carlo. Beloved “Nonna” to Alessandra and Robert Gage, Matthew Rennie, and Giulia Paikin. Dear “Zia” of several nieces and nephews. Caroline was born in Sudbury on August 4th, 1933, the daughter of Dr. Luigi Pancaro and Lina Pancaro (nee Butti) both predeceased. She graduated with honours as a Laboratory Technologist specializing in bacteriology from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. In 1956 she opened the first medical laboratory for the newly built hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy which had been recently founded by Padre Pio (Saint Pio of Pietrelcina). It was in Italy where Caroline met and married Dr. Roberto Grosso, who had graduated in surgery from the School of Medicine at the University of Rome. Upon their relocation to Sudbury, Caroline became extremely active assisting Italian-born Canadians through her work with Roberto in his role as Vice Consul of Italy for Northeastern Ontario. Caroline was later awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy in recognition of her efforts in this regard. She will be forever remembered for her love of music (from Beethoven’s 6th Symphony to Kris Kristofferson); her passion for her grandchildren; being the mom that could balance any chemical equation with ease; jiving; driving a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda with stiletto heels, referring to anyone dear to her as “hon” and her fierce battle to remain independent despite many medical setbacks.
