It is with truly broken hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Rodney Hickey, the last of his generation and husband to the late Doreen nee Mulcahey at AgeCare Samac, Oshawa LTC on Dec 23, 2024.

He is survived by his children, Roxanne (Terry), Rodney (Lori) and Ryan (Lisa). Grandchildren Kira (Jeff), Kinsie (Mark), Rachel, Logan, Melissa and Dustin and great grandchildren Wesley, Addison and Laiken along with Marnie, mother to Rachel and Melissa and grandmother to Wesley.

Mike had a special way of providing teaching moments with patience, grace and fun. He had a way of knowing when to jump in to help and when to quietly be on the sidelines should you need him, and he could make just about anyone feel better after a chat.

He was the youngest of 6 children, born in Sudbury Feb 20, 1937 to Frederick and Theresa (Cain) Hickey and predeceased by his sisters Margaret (Chislett) Hill, Frances McLean, Theresa Kutchaw, Bernadine (Lauzon) Rousseau and brother Len Hickey. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Early days saw him take up hockey as a goalie, since he was the only boy who had catalogues to use for pads. As an adult, he migrated to curling which provided opportunities for him to see some of Canada as he competed in School Boy and then Bell Pioneer leagues. When children came, he took to coaching hockey and football for the boys and then ladies Bell baseball for Roxanne.

After a 35 year career at Bell starting as a tech who helped drag COs through snow laden trails and I&R in Northeastern Ontario to Regional projects, on loan to BCI in Missouri and a coach for the St John First Aid teams, Mike retired in Peterborough and eventually moved to Oshawa to be closer to kids and ultimately grandchildren.

He was the most incredible Grandpa; attending sporting events and theatre productions, carefully caring for all scrapes and bruises and providing wisdom at every opportunity.

His genuinely kind heart was felt by every dog who instantly knew he was good people.

He was an active member of St Joseph the Worker and the Knights of Columbus preparing roast beef dinners and Irish stew for a couple hundred people and volunteering for St Vincent de Paul kitchen.

Thank you to the staff at AgeCare Samac LTC (formerly Chartwell Wynfield) You were a significant part of his family these past 5 years; we greatly appreciate the way you cared for us all this past week.
