KALLINEN, Karl

January 10, 2021 97 years old

Karl 2015 (1)

In loving memory of Karl Viljo Kallinen, a long-time resident of Azilda, who passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Finlandia Village, Sudbury, at the age of 97. Loving husband of Taimi Kallinen (nee Jarvinen) for 76 years. Dear father of Leslee Deminion (husband T. Michael), cherished grandfather of Lila Jermey (husband Michael), and great-grandfather of Sydney. Dear uncle of nieces and nephews in Canada.  Also survived by cousins in Finland and Canada.  Predeceased by his parents Lempi (nee Hietala) and Aate Kallinen, his son Alvin, his brother and sister, Wilfred Kallinen and Viola Luukko, and brothers-in-law, Toivo (aka Toby) Luukko and Taito (aka Jake) Jarvinen.

Karl trained as a carpenter. He worked at numerous construction sites and for Falconbridge and Inco. He also worked at Pinehill Lumber and Azilda Lumber in his later years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, picking blueberries and playing the fiddle, and spending time at the camp he built on Onaping Lake.   Karl carefully crafted a wide range of useful and well-designed items from wood and steel including: furniture, several wooden boats, a shop-made bandsaw, a lathe, a forge for aluminum, and numerous hand tools and household items. He reworked two old cars into tractors which he used for many years.  Karl was not intimidated by construction problems and his creative and useful solutions inspired many.

A special thank you to the staff, and Doctors Bakker and Presenza, at Finlandia Village for their good care during his eight years there. Also thank you to Dr. Kozar, Dr. Devan and  Dr. Bilgasem.

Cremation has taken place, and private burial will be held at a later date. If desired, donations to Finlandia SISU Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
