God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so He put His arms around you
and whispered, “Come to Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you fade away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Frances M. Coelho, 1939

It is with deep regret and sorrow that we announce that James “Jim” Laberge passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, February 23rd, 2023 at Health Science North Hospital, at the age of 81 after his short but courageous battle with cancer.

Jim leaves behind his devoted wife Pierrette “Pat” Laberge (née Brazeau). Son of the late Oscar & Jeannine (née Mallette) Laberge. Beloved brother of predeceased Larry (wife Claire), Claudette Wisniewski (husband Andy), and Mark (wife Sirkka). A hero to his daughters Joanne Noël (husband Luc), and Carole Emblin (husband Paul). An adoring Papa/Poppa to his grandchildren Danica (husband Constantine), Célina (partner Noah), Isaac and Nigel.

Proud great-grandfather to Ava.

Jim worked at Falconbridge for 30 years before retiring in 2004. Friends and family will always remember him for his loyalty, kind heart and wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed all aspects of hockey, from coaching in the 70s and 80s, to playing and watching the sport. Later in life, he took pleasure in spending time golfing and curling, but nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family.

The family would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to Dr. Ali, the staff at the Northeast Cancer Centre, Dr. Bourdon, Dr. Olsten and the ER staff of Health Science North as well as Dr. M. Taylor. Your compassion, and understanding will always be remembered.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place at Park Lawn Crematorium. Thank you to John Belfry for your patience and guidance. Donations can be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation in Jim’s memory.

On Saturday May 27th, 2023, a ceremony honoring his memory will take place at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Levack at 11am, followed by his Celebration of Life at the Royal Canadian Legion in Onaping.
