Dr. Julie Lynn Lukkarila HBSc, PhD

Julie passed away peacefully on October 8, 2020, at her home in Burlington, ON, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Clarke, parents David and Lorraine Lukkarila, sisters Karen and Kim (Robert), nieces Isabelle and Alyssa, and Grandmother Reta Lukkarila. In-laws Jack and Margaret, brother-in-law Darren (May), niece Talia and nephew Drew. Predeceased by Grandfather Mauri Lukkarila and Grandmother Rasmia Shamess. She will be greatly missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Julie moved to Toronto to pursue an education in the sciences. She earned an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, followed by a doctorate degree in polymer chemistry and material science from the University of Toronto. This then led to post-doctorate work with The Gunning Group. Later, teaching many chemistry and other related courses in academia before she transitioned into the workforce as a client liaison for Haltech (The Regional Innovation Center). This is where she developed a mentorship program for entrepreneurs. This experience, lead her to transition into a Business Development Manager for The Ontario Centre of Excellence (OCE) where she paired businesses with masters and doctorate students for the research and development of these companies. Julie is quoted as saying that her career passions included: Science and Technology, Teaching and Innovation.

As well as having an outstanding career, Julie also lived life to the fullest. Her favourite leisure activities included: Basketball, Running, Waterskiing, and Swimming, as well as a love for travel.

Julie took absolute pride in and loved being an Aunt to Isabelle and Alyssa. She was always so excited to come home from Burlington and spend time with them.

Julie was known for rescuing many Canine buddies. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see her running down the street after a stray dog to ensure that it found its home or owner. This could mean also taking it home and looking after it until the owner was found. She will be greatly missed by her fur baby Canela.

She was much loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

The family has requested to mourn privately and at Julie’s request, there will be no visitation or service.
