It is with serenity in our hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of James (“Jim”) Gordon McGarry on June 8, 2024, at the age of seventy-two.

Jim was born in Sarnia, Ontario, on July 15, 1951, to the late Gordon and Dorothy (nee MacDonald) McGarry. He was the youngest and only boy. He was cherished and revered as such by his sisters.

Profoundly missed by his spouse and best friend, the Honourable (former Justice) Louise Gauthier. Dedicated father to Jeffrey (Sara) and Christine (Derek) and special “Pop” to his five grandchildren Ryann, Graham, Braeden, Paityn and Hudson, each of whom put a sparkle in his eye.

He is survived by his sisters Bernice (Melvin), Florence and Shirley. He was loved by his in-laws Robert and Francoise Gauthier (predeceased), Maurice Gauthier (predeceased) and Christine Manners and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jim was raised in Schumacher, Ontario, and Sudbury became home in 1992. A man of faith, Jim is remembered as kind, generous and soft-spoken. He was selfless and this was demonstrated in the many years that he cared for his extended family, Marcel and Aline Gauthier (predeceased), whom he loved with all his heart.

Jim enjoyed entertaining but was happiest being in the background of any gathering making sure every detail was covered and everyone had everything they needed. Jim was proud of his thirty-year career with Falconbridge Limited at both Kidd Creek and Sudbury Operations. He was a problem solver and long after his retirement in 2004, he was always keen to share his knowledge and expertise.

Jim enjoyed curling, golf and watching the Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved to travel and cruise the world with Louise. He was most content in recent years on his deck at Lake Manitou, Manitoulin Island or spending time with close friends in Jamaica Bay, Florida. When in Florida, he volunteered as the Treasurer for the Canadian Club and was the “Lights and Sound Guy” for the Little Theatre.

Jim was a superb chef, and we will always remember the happy times spent around his dining room table enjoying the exquisite meals that he prepared. Those who were lucky enough to receive a copy of Jim’s personalized recipe book, will no doubt value it even more now.

A Celebration of Life, the way Sir James would have liked it, is planned for Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, at Verdicchio Ristorante, 1351 Kelly Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ honour to the Maison McCulloch Hospice, are appreciated. Our family will be forever indebted to the Staff and Volunteers for their compassion, kindness and unparalleled quality of care.
