Gayle (Rumball) McLelland (1936-2020) passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family at Health Sciences North’s Cardiology unit during the evening of Friday February 7th, 2020. She will be reunited with her husband Bill McLelland, predeceased in 2009 and is survived by her three sons, David (wife Kelly) Billy (wife Beverley) and Stephen (wife Maureen). Gayle will be dearly missed and never forgotten by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren, C.J. (Meaghan), Samantha, Ashley Parry (Curt), Jillian Charlebois (Jeremy), Justin, Erin (Scott Sirkka) and Kevin (Millana Marcon) Gayle was the fourth eldest of ten siblings and the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Hanrahan) Rumball. The Rumballs were a founding family of Sudbury’s South End and Gayle lived her entire life in the Lockerby-Robinson area, as a member of St. Patrick’s parish. She is survived by her siblings Linda Rumball, Anne Eles (Bud predeceased), Chris (Suzanne) Rumball and Gerry (Rosiland) Rumball and her sister-in-law Judy (Don) MacKay. She is predeceased by her siblings Betty (Will) Bohm, Jack (Rita) Rumball, Bill (Diane) Rumball, Sister Peggy Rumball, and June Rumball, and her brother-in-law Bob (Mary) McLelland. Gayle attended Sudbury’s Sheridan Tech High School and graduated in 1956 from the Salvation Army Toronto Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She married her husband Bill in 1957 and worked at the “Old” St. Joseph’s Hospital in the Nursery before it closed and the Laurentian Hospital opened in 1975. For the next fifteen years she worked in Staffing as well as a supervisor in CSR. While raising her sons, she was an active volunteer at Robinson Playground where she and her boys made life-long friends. Upon retiring in the early 1990’s, she enjoyed winters in Florida and spending time with her family. She was a common fixture at her grandchildren’s sporting events, birthday parties, graduations and special occasions, where everyone knew her as Grandma Gayle. Her children and grandchildren were inspired by the love and dedication she showed to her family. Gayle was an avid reader and stayed physically active, playing golf, bowling in the ladies’ league, attending movie matinees with special friends, travelling with family and taking seniors’ bus tours. She will be missed by many friends; including “the girls from Curves” and her friends at St. Patrick’s Catholic Women’s League. The McLelland family is grateful for the watchful and kind gestures of neighbours and friends who helped Gayle to live independently and to her family physician Dr. Sawkiw, who cared for her and kept her well for over 40 years. In the past month she encountered many caring professionals at HSN, including the staff and physicians of the Emergency department, CMU and 8 North Cardiology unit. Special thanks to Dr. Frood, Dr. Puranam, and Dr. Chenard of the Hospitalist service, Dr. McElhaney and the COACH team. The nursing staff on 8 North showed exceptional care and concern supporting her in her final days, going above and beyond expectations.
