RYAN, Daniel James – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dan Ryan, age 64, on Monday, August 24, 2009 in the Haliburton Hospital after a brave and fierce battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Dan leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Jan Vernon and was the beloved son of Barbara Ryan of Richmond Hill. Dan was a loving and devoted father to his two sons, James Ryan (Lucinda) of Arlington, Virginia and Dr. Michael Ryan (Anna) of Winnipeg. Dan will be sadly missed by his three grandchildren, Christopher, Claire and Ailis. He was a special friend to Jan's sons Jay (Beth) of Grimsby and Lee (fiancée Stephanie) of Montreal. Dan will be missed by his brother Ken (Darlene) of Sudbury, and sisters Sylvia Thompson (John) of Ballantrae and Ann McRae (Bill) of Moncton. Predeceased by his brother Bob (survived by sister-in-law, Rickey) of Sudbury. Cherished “Uncle Danny” to many nieces and nephews, and Jan's granddaughter, Aspen. Dan was raised in Sudbury and began his career with the Ontario Provincial Police force stationed in Sudbury, Chapleau, and Warren during his 10 year tenure. He entered into business with Radio Shack, owning a franchise in Sudbury and completing a successful role as security director at the head office in Barrie. Dan eventually became the section head and manager of security for the Revenue Canada- Taxation Centre in Sudbury. In 1987, Dan joined Cambrian College as Professor of the Police Foundations program, designing and teaching law and security courses. Dan was an accomplished pilot who both built and flew private aircraft and was an active member of the Sudbury EAA for many years. He was a long time member of the OPP Veterans Association (Badge #3023). Dan and his family wish to express deepest thanks to the Sudbury medical staff, particularly Dr. Ray Sawkiw and associates (especially Simone), and the Haliburton Highlands medical staff, particularly Dr. Aiofe Conway, and D'Arcy Hunter (Paramed Homecare Nurse) for their compassion, caring and support. As well, many thanks to SIRCH and CCAC for their timely and caring support. At Dan's request there will be no funeral services.
