It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Allen Skakoon on Saturday, April 12 at Health Sciences North at the age of 55 years.
Allen is the dear son of the late Edward Skakoon and Effie (nee Lapointe). He is the cherished brother of the late Rory Skakoon, late Eileen Skakoon (late Eugene), Marlene Bole (Stan) and Tamara Mellaney (Eldon). Loving father to Emily Brouillette-Skakoon and cherished grandfather to Jazmyne, Nate, and Noah. Allen will be sadly missed by his nephews Kendrick and Eric who share the same love of hockey. Allen will be equally missed by all of his uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
In his younger years, Allen enjoyed spending time with his father fishing, always in pursuit of the next “big catch”. He was an outstanding skater and played hockey competitively spending most weekends and evenings at the rink. Best times were had skating with family on the outdoor rink that his father made. In his youth, Allen especially loved the annual summer trips with his family to New Brunswick. He spent many hours searching the ocean waters for crabs, lobsters, and jellyfish and scouring the beach for fossils and beach glass.
Allen was a graduate of Confederation High School in Val Caron. With his sense of wit and humour he made friends easily and was a bit of a jokester and class clown. Allen tried many post-secondary pursuits until finally graduating from Cambrian College in Sudbury in the Indigenous Lands Management Program.
Allen loved music. In his youth, he taught himself to play the acoustic guitar. He dreamed of becoming a songwriter and wrote many original songs. He loved listening to his music “loud” while singing along.
We would like to express gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses at Health Sciences North for their care and compassion.
As per his wishes, there will be no funeral visitation or service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Arrangements entrusted to the Cooperative Funeral Home.
