Smith,Christopher

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Chris at the age of 88 on Sunday, September 11th in Toronto.  Son of Thomas Smith and Mary Dunne of Dublin, Ireland (Predeceased). Loving husband of Laura Lee Smith (nee Gribble).  Loving father of Valerie Scannura, Thomas Smith and Kevin Smith.  Loving grandpa to Anjelica Scannura, Keith Smith and Kerlyn Smith and father in law to Roger Scannura and Lynn Smith.  He is survived by his brother Thomas Smith.  Predeceased by his brother William Smith and his sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Kathleen.

Chris was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland where he was a member of the National Hurling team. Upon moving to Canada in 1957, he joined the Canadian Army and spent 3 years there, two of which were spent in Germany. He came to Sudbury after receiving a job posting and met his Laura, who became his wife. He worked for 35 years at Falconbridge Nickel Mines as a metal analyst and was active in men’s soccer spending his extracurricular time coaching soccer and hockey.  He loved to sing and led the choir at various churches and the Irish Club, where he eventually became President. while also becoming an important figure in the Sudbury Folk Arts Council.

His contribution to his community was invaluable. He moved to Toronto in 1996 to be close to his family members and to stay involved in their endeavors. His satisfaction in life was ultimately centered around his family’s success and happiness. His generosity will always be remembered and cherished by those who loved him.  We will always remember Chris whistling and singing.

There is no official gathering but Chris’s memory will be celebrated privately with family members.
