In loving memory of Elma Vakkuri (nee Myllymäki; born April 6th, 1924), 96 years, who passed away May 3, 2020 at Pioneer Manor.
Beloved wife for 61 years (married Nov. 7, 1948) of husband Antti (predeceased Aug. 15, 2009). Loving mother of predeceased daughter Eila Bradley (2014) and son John of Finland. Also, mother-in-law to Keith Bradley of Calgary. Predeceased by her sister Liisa Rinne (2012) and brother Eero (2007). Dear daughter of Nikolai Myllymäki (1939) and Amalia (nee Hanhila;1946). Will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Canada and Finland.
Elma was raised on a farm in Kortesjärvi, Finland. She met her husband Antti in the same area. Their daughter Eila was born in Finland and after moving to Sudbury in 1951, their son John was born. Elma was a devout member of St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and sang in their church choir for 50 years. She was also an avid member of the Ladies of Kaleva group for 30 years and a volunteer at the Sudbury Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She was a respectful manager at Elsie’s Ice Cream Shop in the Sudbury City Centre. Elma enjoyed gardening and would share her rhubarb with friends. Also, she loved picking blueberries to be used for different purposes (e.g. sauce for rice pudding). Having endured a war, she was extremely good at meeting a budget. She enjoyed taking trips to Florida with Antti during the winters and spending time there at their apartment.
Many thanks to the staff at Pioneer Manor for their kindness and compassionate care during her final years.
Due to the pandemic, a Celebration of her life and Memorial Service will be held at a later date with arrangements by the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home, Sudbury.
For your knowledge, the family plot is located in the Civic Memorial Cemetery, 365 Second Ave., Sudbury, Ontario, where a committal service will be held on Friday, May 8th, 2020, at 11am, and friends can attend.
As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to Hannah Lake Bible Camp or the charity of your choice.
