14-year-old dead after becoming submerged in a marsh during horseback accident

Hamilton police say a teenage horseback rider has died after an accident in a marsh on Monday evening.

Police say the 14-year-old girl was riding with her mother when the girl's horse became trapped in a "marshy bog."

They say the girl dismounted the horse, but became submerged in the marsh while waiting for help.

Investigators say the girl was pulled from the marsh without vital signs and rushed to hospital where she died of her injuries.

They say the identity of the girl will not be released.

Police say the girl and her mother were from the Oakville, Ont., area, and were both experienced riders.
