Hospital in Kitchener, Ont., declares COVID-19 outbreak; five cases reported

KITCHENER, Ont. — A hospital in Kitchener, Ont., has declared a COVID-19 outbreak on one unit after three patients and two staff tested positive.

Grand River Hospital says it has now closed its clinical teaching unit to new patient admissions.

The hospital says it is also suspending in-person visits in favour of virtual connections.

A spokeswoman says staff at high risk of exposure have been tested and asked to self-isolate.

Cheryl Evans says the hospital is still deciding whether to close one of its eight operating rooms.

The hospital had said it would close the theatre as of Monday to create urgent-care capacity.
