Montreal's mayor is speaking out after a weekend of gun violence in the city.

Police will be stepping up patrols in certain areas following two incidents over the weekend, including a shootout with cops during which an officer was injured, Valerie Plante said Monday.

Shots were fired into an apartment building in the Riviere-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough, in Montreal's east end, late Sunday night.

Fewer than 24 hours earlier, five people were injured after police exchanged gunfire with a man in Old Montreal. Quebec's police watchdog, which is investigating the incident, said one officer and the suspect were among the wounded.

Plante said police will increase patrols in both areas of the city that saw gun violence over the weekend, in an effort to reassure the public and prevent violent crime.

She said police will be particularly visible in Old Montreal when bars close.

"We are taking the situation very seriously and we are putting a series of actions in place to curb the problem of violent crime," Plante said in a statement. "We cannot accept actions that have the potential to seriously injure or even kill citizens in Montreal."
