If you’re in the market for a new cat or dog, the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter can help.

The city charges up to $620 for a dog adoption or $310 for a cat.

“These fees include the cost of spaying/neutering, basic vaccinations and a one-year dog or cat licence, and microchipping,” the city shelter states on its website. “Fees may vary depending on the age, health and needs of the pet. For example, an elderly cat or dog may be adopted for a lower fee than a kitten or puppy. Appointments are required for all adoptions.”

Before adopting, the shelter recommends all family members meet the potential pet before finalizing the adoption.

“In most cases, you can take your new pet home the same day. In the majority of cases, new pets fit in well with their new families,” the shelter said. “If they do not, you can return the animal to the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter. Please note surrender fees may apply when returning your pet.

Adoptees will require a driver’s licence or other identification showing a current address, as well as payment of the adoption fee by cash, debit, Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

The shelter also operates what it calls its Barn Buddy program.

“The Barn Buddies working cat program places cats that are best suited to be barn cats and working cats, not cats that would make house pets. It is highly recommended that a minimum of two cats be placed at the same location at the same time,” the shelter said.

If you’re in the market for barn cats, a shelter staff member or volunteer may visit your location to ensure it is appropriate for barn cats. In some cases pictures of the barn/shop will be requested instead.

Prior to adoption, the cats will be:

  • spayed/neutered
  • microchipped
  • dewormed, deflead
  • vaccinated for Feline Rhinotracheitis Virus, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).

“Due to the nature of the program, we may not have suitable cats available immediately, but will try to fill your request as soon as possible,” the shelter said. “We will maintain a waiting list as the number of cats available as candidates for the Barn Cat Program will fluctuate.”
