Officers from Greater Sudbury's traffic management unit conducted an enforcement initiative Monday, charging 58 people with speeding between 20 and 40 km/h over the speed limit.

Officers targeted the out-lying areas where they say speeds are often higher. One individual was charged twice during the day Monday, potentially losing seven demerit points. Seven people were charged with failing to wear seat belts, while nine other traffic act charges were also laid.

Police say they will continue random speed checks to ensure the safety of the public and to reduce the number of collisions on Greater Sudbury roads.
