A 25-year-old Toronto woman allegedly assaulted the owner of a vehicle she was attempting to steal near Boston Pizza on Donna Drive, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

On Jan. 21, officers attended a call at about 12:30 a.m. where a 1996 Jeep Cherokee had been left running and unlocked in the parking lot in an attempt to warm it up. The suspect allegedly attempted to steal the vehicle, but was confronted by the vehicle's owner.

The suspect hit the Jeep's owner in the face, but was still prevented from taking the vehicle.

It was later learned that the suspect was on a recognizance to keep the peace at the time.

She has been charged with theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, assault and breach of probation.

With the return of extremely cold weather, Greater Sudbury Police Service reminds the public to lock unattended vehicles if they are left running.
