An early morning fire Friday at the Civic Memorial Cemetery on Second Avenue destroyed a number of cemetery vehicles and an equipment storage shed today.

The Ontario Fire Marshal?s office has been called in to investigate the cause of the fire. While it has not yet been
confirmed, officials are saying it appears to have been the work of arsonists.

Cemetery grounds and the mausoleum were not damaged by the fire, officials say.

Once preliminary investigations are complete, cemetery staff will personally inspect each headstone and interment site as an added precaution. Municipal staff will contact family members by phone, if necessary.

City officials decided to close the cemetery grounds and office on Friday.

?For vandals to do their despicable work in a cemetery upsets an awful lot of people, because people hear of the fire...and immediately wonder, has there been a problem with the gravestones...it?s reprehensible,? said Greater Sudbury Mayor Jim Gordon.

?As far as I?m concerned, if they catch these guys they should dress them up in orange and make them push brooms down Elm Street.?

The city will be implementing around- the- clock security measures until further notice.
