An Atikameksheng First Nation resident is facing several charges related to alleged domestic violence and sexual assault incidents that occurred over the past year.

On June 10 at 5:15 p.m., members of the Atikameksheng First Nation Police began an investigation into what an OPP news release called “historical domestic violence and sexual assault incidents.”

The incidents in question are alleged to have occurred in 2019 and 2020 on Atikameksheng First Nation territory.

The Sudbury OPP Crime Unit assisted in the investigation.

As a result, a 33-year-old Atikameksheng FN resident (OPP no longer specify the gender of people arrested and charged) was charged. The name of the accused was not released.

The 33-year-old faces two counts of spousal assault, one count of sexual assault, one count of spousal assault with a weapon and one count of overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person.

The accused was released by way of an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on Sept. 2.
