Attack with tire iron and hatchet leads to the arrest of three

GSPS arrested each person at a different time and location, they are all faicng multiple charges including attempted murder

Greater Sudbury Police are reporting the arrest of three individuals they allege violently attacked a man using a tire iron and a hatchet, then stole his bag before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

This is a targeted attack, said police, as the individuals involved are known to each other.

At approximately 5:50 p.m. on March 21, officers were dispatched to the area of Old City Hall Lane in relation to a robbery that had just occurred.

Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year-old man who had sustained serious injuries from the attack. He was transported to hospital by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. that same day, officers located and arrested a 35-year-old woman on Louis Street. Upon searching her, officers report locating the bag that was allegedly stolen from the man. In the bag, police said they found more than 10 grams of fentanyl.

She has been charged with: 

  • Attempted murder;
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Robbery;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and;
  • Possession of a controlled substance.

“Officers also report locating and seizing the vehicle used during the incident,” police said in a news release. “Detectives have applied for a search warrant for the vehicle.”

At the same time, officers located and arrested a 31-year-old man on Larch Street in relation to this incident. He has been charged with: 

  • Attempted murder; 
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Robbery; 
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000; 
  • Possession of a controlled substance; 
  • Five counts of driving while under suspicion and failure to comply with a probation order.

Both individuals were held in police custody overnight to attend Bail Court on March 22 to answer to the charges.

Then, at approximately 9:25 a.m. today, March 22, officers received information the third individual involved in the incident was on foot in the area of Elgin Street and Shaughnessy Street. 

Officers report heading to the area to find the the 33-year-old man. Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said officers tracked the man down near the Ukrainian Seniors Centre at 30 Notre Dame Ave. He was taken into custody without incident, Dunn said. 

During the arrest, Dunn said, officers believed the was experiencing an unspecified “medical emergency” and officers called paramedics. The man was taken to hospital for diagnosis. He has been charged with: 

  • Attempted murder; 
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • Robbery, and;
  • Driving while disqualified. 
  • He will attend Bail Court March 22 to answer to the charges.
