Sudbury Regional Hospital has issued a warning concerning an increase in all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) injuries.

According to Dr. Andrew Caruso, medical director of the trauma program, ?People must recognize ATVs are heavy, powerful machines that require
knowledge and skill to operate.?

In the three-year period between April 2001 and April 2004, the program saw 16 people admitted with severe injuries due to ATV crashes.

ATV-related activities are now the third most common cause of severe injuries in Canada next to cycling and snowmobiling.

According to the Canada Safety Council, speed, inexperience, improper apparel, alcohol and non-use of helmets are common factors in ATV accidents.
