An ATV driver went through the ice on Lake Agnew in Nairn-Hyman Township on April 16.

Sudbury OPP responded to a report at around 3 p.m. of a man who was in the water and unable to get up onto the ice.

The cottagers on the lake and the local Nairn-Hyman Fire Department used ropes and canoes to successfully rescue the man.

EMS transported the male to the hospital where he was treated for exposure.

The Sudbury OPP wants to ensure the public practices proper ice safety. Area residents must take caution regarding thin ice conditions in the Sudbury area lakes and rivers.

Tragically, every year many Canadians die in ice-related incidents. Travelling over thin ice puts the rider and any potential rescuers at risk of losing their lives.

Proper use of safety equipment can reduce the risks of travelling over ice covered bodies of water. Some of these include the wearing of survival suits, carrying picks (used to grip ice to pull yourself out of the water), and carrying a rescue rope.
