The body of a young Azilda man was recovered from Kawartha Lakes Sunday, after perishing in a snowmobile-related incident the evening before.

On March 7 at 5:15 p.m. members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency crews responded to reports of a missing male in Kawartha Lakes.

According to eye-witness accounts, the individual had been riding in a toboggan, being pulled behind a snowmobile, when he fell through the ice.

The Trent Lakes Fire Department and OPP Aviation Services attended the scene but were unable to locate the individual in question.

OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit joined the search the next morning and on at 11:45 a.m., located the body of 20-year-old Tyler Christine-Bourgeois of Azilda.

The deceased will now be transported to the Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit at the Forensic Services and Coroners Complex in Toronto for a post-mortem examination, according to a press release.

The incident remains under investigation.

Peterborough Country OPP has advised those with snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles to avoid driving on lakes and rivers. If passing over a body of water cannot be avoided, drivers are encouraged to check ice conditions beforehand, wear a floater suit and carry easily-accessible ice picks.

"No ice is safe ice," said police in a press release.
