A man upset over the breakup of his marriage went on a rampage Sept. 26, allegedly assaulted a resident of Pearl Street and attempted to kick the window out of a police cruiser once arrested, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

During his rampage, he threatened bystanders and tried to hit them with a large piece of wood, said police.

Numerous 911 calls were received around 7 p.m.. The 39-year-old man, who police said had been drinking, kicked down the door of an apartment belonging to someone he knew. He then assaulted the occupant. He left, only to return a short time later in an attempt to assault the occupant again.

This time, the victim tried to protect himself with a police-style baton; however, the suspect wrenched the baton away from the victim and began to beat him with it, police allege. The victim’s injuries did not require hospitalization.

He then tried to flee the scene, but was located by police who tried to subdue him. He attempted to head butt and spit on the officers, according to police. The suspect, once placed in a cruiser, began to kick the window out of the vehicle. Police had to restrain him.

He was brought back to police headquarters and charged with a number of offences including break and enter, assault with a weapon, and resisting arrest.
