Two hikers escaped with non life-threatening injuries after an encounter with an aggressive black bear on Labour Day Monday.

At around 6 p.m. Sept. 4, the hikers were walking with a dog along a wooded trail around 20 minutes north of Birch Hill Road (off Long Lake Road), when the dog came into contact with the bear.

The dog ran back towards the hikers with the bear in pursuit. The bear then turned its attention to the hikers, and proceeded to claw and bite both.

The hikers took turns fending off the bear by striking it. Eventually the bear stopped its attack and left the area.

The pair then made their way back to safety and were treated at HSN for non life-threatening injuries. The MNRF was contacted and made aware of the encounter.
