A North Bay berry selling operation has been fined $12,500 and the company's director $6,000 for violating the Employment Standards Act.

The fines were imposed Oct. 18 against James Bay Wild Fruit, which buys and sells blueberries at roadside stands in North Bay, Sudbury, and Gravenhurst.

Workers exceeded statutory limits for the number of hours worked. During the week of Aug. 24, 2003, six employees worked in excess of 60 hours. In some cases, they worked close to 100 hours at the request of the company.

The Ministry of Labour conducted an audit of the company's records when two employees filed claims in 2003 alleging violations of the Employment Standards Act.
